Wire Tutorial - Modulation with an Offset

The modulation that we created in the last page was rather intense. Suppose we want a more subtle modulation. We can reduce the amplitude of our modulation signal and add it to a constant offset. The offset determines the center frequency. Wire and JSyn have a number of simple arithmetic modules that can be used to alter signal values.

  1. Add an AddUnit from the "Add, Arithmetic" menu.
  2. Connect it up as shown below.

  3. Set the frequency knob to 6.0 and lower the amplitude to 40.0 Hz.
  4. Click on the "Play Keys" button and play the ASCII keyboard.
  5. Notice that we now have a more subtle vibrato effect that could be used in a traditional musical instrument.
